Designing a build-it-yourself computer to spark curiosity in the next generation of coders.
We partnered with Kano to design a build-it-yourself computer kit for young coders, built around the Raspberry Pi. The result is a playful and educational experience that merges product and packaging — inviting curiosity and creativity from the very first unboxing.
Kano set out to make coding approachable for everyone, especially kids. We joined them to develop the Kano Computer Kit: a build-it-yourself computer based on the Raspberry Pi board. The aim was to make a technical product feel playful, intuitive, and engaging from the moment it arrives in the post.
Our approach combined product and packaging into one cohesive experience. Every element, from the custom-designed case to the re-usable storage box, was designed to be accessible, tactile, and clear. The packaging is compact enough to fit through a letterbox, and once opened, doubles as a home for the kit.
At the heart of the kit is a new keyboard, reimagined for wireless coding and gaming. It features a built-in touchpad, colour-coded buttons, and quick-access command keys that align with Kano’s learning guides and help users navigate coding tasks with ease. A built-in charging cable adds convenience, encouraging independent use.
To protect the Raspberry Pi board, we created a transparent case made from two interlocking ‘C’ shaped bumpers. This keeps connections stable while leaving the top open, encouraging hands-on experimentation. Clip-in covers and add-ons like a speaker and amplifier can be attached as skills grow, making the kit expandable over time.
By simplifying setup and encouraging exploration, the Kano Computer Kit invites kids to learn through doing. It’s more than a product – it’s a stepping stone to digital creativity.
