How might a digital streaming service play a larger role in the lives of its customers? We collaborated with Sky to design and deliver Sky Glass, a television for a new age of digital subscriptions.

Sky was at a critical yet exciting moment, moving from satellite broadcasting to a streaming service. Their previous consumer hardware remit focused on set-top boxes and speakers to bring its services to homes across the UK. We collaborated with Sky’s in-house hardware team to identify key challenges and opportunities, and formulate a new hardware vision.

One cable and one plug was the ambition. Sky’s first television aimed to consolidate many of the products that might be in the living room already, from a soundbar to a set-top box. Challenging the trend of increasingly slim, black TV screens, we incorporated depth, colour, and materiality – approaching Sky Glass as a piece of furniture designed to stand out rather than blend in.

Through rigorous research, strategic thinking, and iterative design development, we meticulously examined every element. Beyond the external appearance, we carefully considered the internal electrical and mechanical components and ensured that every aspect of the user experience was thoughtfully optimised.

The result is a television for the streaming age: a platform that elevates Sky’s original broadcasting content through an immersive cinematic experience, integrating multiple functions into a single elegant package. Through this process, we developed a new, ownable design language for Sky hardware, one that has shaped Sky’s future product roadmap.
