A computer anyone can make

We collaborated with Kano to design a hands-on computer and coding kit based on the Raspberry Pi computer board. Our strategy was to make the product intuitive to set up and accessible for children, we developed the kit as a complete experience, designing new hardware such as the keyboard and case for the Raspberry Pi as well as creating packaging that can be re-used as storage

Merging product and packaging

Our design strategy was to make the product intuitive and accessible for children, we developed the kit as a complete experience, with customised components, and packaging designed to be kept for storage as well as being small enough to post through a letter box.

Wireless coding and gaming keyboard

A new keyboard archetype was created for the kit to get users started with coding as quickly as possible. The keyboard has a built-in touchpad and colour-coded mouse buttons making it easier for children to use. The keyboard also has a number of predefined command keys that help users work through the projects in the Kano instruction booklet. There are also convenient features such as a built in charging cable.

Open and closed case

We developed a protective plastic case for the Raspberry Pi computer board made from two ‘C’ shaped bumpers in clear plastic. These snap around the board; making it easy to handle, stabilise the cable connections and allow the top to remain open for experimentation, a unique feature of the design. To enhance the case there are additional clip-in covers that can be added if you want to enclose the Raspberry Pi, or connect more components such as the DIY speaker and small amplifier, both powered directly from the Raspberry Pi.
