Fortnum & Mason Hamperling

Reinventing the picnic hamper

The contemporary cousin of the traditional Fortnum’s hamper

Collaborating with Fortnum & Mason and Wolff Olins, we created the Hamperling. This quirky and innovative take on the traditional hamper was successfully designed to boost summer sales for Fortnum & Mason for people to take to close by outdoor events such as the annual Serpentine Pavilion in Hyde Park, London.

Since launching, the Hamperling is now being sold at their St Pancras Station Tea Salon and in the food hall at Fortnum & Mason’s Piccadilly store.

High on style and etiquette

We designed structural packaging comprising of simple modular reusable cardboard stacking trays that can accommodate drinks and a food offer of lunch or afternoon tea for one or two people. The trays are carried in an iconic shaped printed cardboard wrap coloured in Fortnum & Mason’s signature eau de nil blue.

Low environmental impact

Care was taken to limit the environmental impact of the packaging. All the items were recyclable and printed with vegetable-based ink. The cutlery was stainless steel (designed to be taken home). The trays could be reused by cafe staff and messaging on the wrapper encouraged users to recycle it appropriately.

Tools for dining

The Hamperling provides everything needed for a perfect picnic including a custom-designed waterproof paper tablecloth, made from Tyvek material with a screen-printed pattern of summer strawberries together with a gold honey bee.
